ABOUT

Dan Cox is a record producer, recording engineer and mix engineer hailing from Hackney, East London. A specialist in the ‘lives takes’ approach to studio recording, he is best know for his work on Laura Marling’s 2015 album ‘Short Movie’, and former Sonic Youth frontman Thurston Moore’s solo outing ‘The Best Day’

In a career spanning over 12 years he has clocked up tens of thousands of studio hours across virtually every musical genre, alongside recordings artists as diverse as Tom Odell, Lianne La Havas, Florence And The Machine, Marina and The Diamonds, Ghostpoet, Flume, Kele Okereke (Bloc Party), Fyfe Dangerfield, Three Trapped Tigers, The Red Krayola, The Staves, Lewis & Leigh and hundreds more.

He has also worked on numerous TV and film soundtracks, including Victoria (ITV), My Family and Other Strangers (BBC) Paddington, Under The Shadow, The Keeping Room, Jet Trash and many others.

Dan has spent virtually all of his career based out of London’s Urchin Studios, a studio he founded in 2007 with long time collaborator Matt Ingram. After an initial 5 years spell as a modest sized project studio, in 2012 the studio was relocated to a new purpose built premises in Hackney, East London where it quickly became a much loved stalwart of the UK recording industry which in 2016 earned it a nomination for Studio of The Year at the MPG awards alongside such giants as AIR and Strongroom Studios.

Alongside Urchin’s awards nomination, Dan won MPG Breakthrough Engineer of The Year in 2014, and has subsequently been found on the shortlists for MPG Engineer of the year in 2016, PSNE Studio Engineer of the Year in 2014 and 2015, and Resolution Studio Producer/Engineer of the year 2014. More recently, Lewis & Leigh’s debut album ‘Ghost’, which was mixed by Dan at Urchin Studios won Album of The Year 2017 at the UK Americana Music Awards.

As well as his work directly as a music producer and engineer, Dan sits on the Executive Board of the MPG (Music Producer’s Guild) and MPG Awards, a position which he has held for the past 2 years.

URCHIN STUDIOS

In 2007 Dan teamed up with drummer/producer Matt Ingram to open Urchin Studios. Urchin was conceived not as a technical haven for stale recording engineers but as a place to stimulate creativity and inspire musicians.

The ‘old Urchin’ was born from the ashes of The Strokes producer Gordon Raphael‘s ‘The Silver Transporterraum London”, the studio he set up when he first moved to London. Although Gordon is no longer closely associated with Urchin, his support was instrumental in helping Dan and Matt get things off the ground.

Since then they’ve worked with literally hundreds of musicians, from self-funded local bands to major label artists.

2012 saw the recording studio relocate from it’s former home in Limehouse to a brand new purpose build premises in The Laundry building, Hackney. It’s construction was a mammoth undertaking, and you can read all about it on the Building Urchin blog.
